Why a site refuses automated reading

Many shops filter the visits they take for robots. Here is what then happens in Eloshon Scraper, and what is still possible.

What a site can do

Faced with an automated visit, a site can show a check page, ask you to prove you are a person, refuse to answer after too many requests, refuse access, require a sign-in, or deliver its content only to a real browser. The Scraper recognizes these cases and names them: Anti-bot challenge (Cloudflare), CAPTCHA, Too many requests, Access denied, Login required, JavaScript required.

Pace matters too. Simple reading leaves a pause between two requests to the same site (Pause between pages) and limits how many pages are read at once (Pages in parallel): go faster, and the site may refuse sooner.

Before you read a site

Check the site's terms of use and the rights to its content (text, photos, trademarks) before you read or reuse it. Each user remains responsible for how they use the data they read. This note is general information, not legal advice.

What the app does

The Scraper first reads each page simply, from your computer, for free. When a page only shows its products with JavaScript, it opens it in its built-in browser, if Browser when the page needs it is on, which is the default.

If that browser meets a check and Manual intervention is on, also the default, the scraping waits. Its status becomes CAPTCHA required, a browser window opens, and the Intervention required window gives the kind of check, the page address and the reason. You pass the check yourself in the browser, then click Done — Continue: the Scraper reads the page again and goes on. It never solves or bypasses a protection. The browser keeps its profile from one scraping to the next.

If you cannot pass the check, Give up this site stops reading the whole site, not just that page: the job stops as on a blocked site. The products already read are kept, and the job stays in Jobs, where it can be resumed.

When Manual intervention is off, the browser stays hidden: the check page is not shown to you, and the scraping stops as on a blocked site. The same goes for a job resumed from Jobs: a resume runs without manual intervention.

Known limit

Today, a check asked by a category page, while the products are being searched for, stops the whole job without opening the browser or the intervention window, and the other categories are not read. The same check on a product page does open the window. In that case, the end screen shows Scraping blocked and lists the routes still open. Another case: when the site refuses simple reading of a list's next pages or of the product pages and the built-in browser reads them again, the first check stops that reading, again without the window: the products keep what the list gave, and the end screen says so.

What you see in Jobs

In Jobs, every job has a status written out in words, with an icon. For a site that refuses, you will mostly see Blocked when nothing could be read, Partial when part was read before the refusal, or No progress when nothing was moving any more. The reason shows when you rest the mouse on the status. Resume restarts a stopped job where it stopped: Resume a stopped job.

The routes that remain

When a scraping ends blocked, or empty because the page needs a browser, seems protected or holds product data that was not used, the end screen lists under What to do next only the routes available on your computer, out of three:

  • Your browser: the Eloshon Scraper extension reads the page in your Chrome or Edge, with your connection, for free. It must be installed, and this site activated in the extension. When that is the case, a scraping the site refused before any product was read continues there on its own.
  • The specialized browser: it drives your real Chrome from your computer, for free, and only when you click Retry with the specialized browser. Off by default, it is turned on in Settings, Protection and intervention card, and needs Google Chrome, Python and the nodriver module.
  • Assisted unlock: Eloshon's servers read the page for you. This paid service needs a licence key, entered in Settings, and only runs when you click, with its estimated cost shown first (see pricing).

If none is available, the screen says so and tells where to turn on the specialized browser.
