What the Converter does with an Eloshon Scraper file

Eloshon Scraper and its extension copy what the site writes, without changing anything: the page’s title, its description, the dimensions. The Converter then prepares this data for your store, without making anything up, and tells you before the import what it changed and what is left to check.

In short

Open the Scraper’s file by clicking the drop area (not by dragging the file), with its manifest in the same folder. The Converter reads weights written the way they are on a label, cleans up the SEO title and description, and lists at the Review step what is worth a look.

The case: Atelier Démo, a fictitious store, used Eloshon Scraper to read the “teas and spices” category of a fictitious supplier, fournisseur-demo.example.com. It is preparing to import these products into Shopify.

Versions

Pack weights and the clean-up of the SEO title and description are available from Eloshon Converter 0.1.19. The warnings about empty weights and about dimensions come with version 0.1.20.

Which file to open

Three Scraper files are suitable. Each one has a small companion file in the same folder: the manifest. It says what each column contains and whether the export is complete.

  • The products.json file of a job in the app, with its manifest, manifest.json. It is the most complete file: all the images, the crossed-out price, the references. Where to find it: Results, files and the Converter.
  • The CSV file of a job, with its manifest: same name, ending in .manifest.json.
  • The CSV that the extension’s panel saves with Exporter CSV (Export CSV; the panel only exists in French). The panel saves its manifest at the same time, with the same name ending in .manifest.json. Thanks to the manifest, a column you renamed in the panel before the export is still recognised (a column renamed later, in a spreadsheet, is not).

Open the file, step by step

  1. At the Platforms step, under Source platform, click the Eloshon Scraper box. Under Target platform, click your store’s platform, here Shopify. Then click Continue, at the bottom right.
The Eloshon Scraper box, circled in red, in Source platform.
  1. At the File step, click the big orange Drop a CSV, JSON or .eloshon file, or click to browse area. A window opens so you can browse your computer: go to the file’s folder and select the file.
  2. Read the box that appears under the area: File recognized, the name of the format and the number of rows. For an export from the panel, a line also says how many product pages were read, for example “Complete export: 6 product page(s) read out of 6.”.
  3. Click Continue.
The area to click, and the box that confirms the format and the complete export.

Click rather than drag

A file dragged onto the area is read without its manifest. A CSV from the panel with an extra column, like Poids (Weight), is then not recognised as a file from the extension. Click the area to choose the file: its manifest is read with it.

The weight of a pack

On a label, the weight is often written as a quantity: “4x90g” means 4 jars of 90 grams, 360 grams in total. Since version 0.5.67 of the Scraper, the extension’s panel already works out this total (“360 g”). The Converter does the same calculation for any weight column written the way it is on the label, for example in an older export from the panel or in a supplier’s file. A litre counts as a kilo, and a number of pieces gives no weight, since the weight of one piece is unknown. Before version 0.1.19 of the Converter, “4x90g” gave 4 grams and “36pc” gave 36 kilos.

The SEO title and description

The SEO title and the SEO description are the texts Google shows in its results: the title in blue, the description below it. They come from the title of the product’s page (the <title> tag) and from its description (the meta description tag). In a CSV from the panel, they are the Titre SEO (SEO title) and Description SEO (SEO description) columns.

The Scraper copies them exactly as the site writes them, site name included. The Converter cleans them up, without ever writing a text in their place:

  • The same text on many products. If 3 products or more have exactly the same title or the same description, it is the site’s slogan, not the product’s text: it is left empty.
  • The site’s name at the end of the title. Thé fumé - Fournisseur Démo becomes Thé fumé. The Converter recognises this ending when it appears on at least two titles in the file, or when it contains the name from the site’s address.
  • A description cut off by the site. Many sites cut their description at around 160 characters, in the middle of a word. A description of 120 to 170 characters that does not end with a full stop (or another end-of-sentence mark) is shortened to its last complete sentence, if that sentence ends after the 50th character. Otherwise, it is kept as it is and flagged.
  • Too long, too short. A title of more than 70 characters and a description of fewer than 50 characters are flagged, but not changed.

Where they go: to Shopify, into SEO Title and SEO Description; to BigCommerce, into Page Title and Meta Description. To WooCommerce, the title is not carried over (SEO title is not carried by WooCommerce.) and the SEO description becomes the product’s short description when it has none. To Wix, neither of them is written today, and no message says so.

Stock

A file Eloshon Scraper read on a website gives that site’s availability, not your stock: by default, its quantities are removed. Your choice is remembered on this computer for this target platform, and then applies to every file converted to it. You make this choice at the Mapping step, in the Variant stock list, above the preview.

The Variant stock list, set by default to Quantities removed for a Scraper file.

The warnings to read before importing

At the Review step, scroll down to the Good to know about this conversion box. It lists what the Converter did and what you should check, with the number of products concerned. These messages do not prevent the export, and they are not included in the number of warnings shown at the top of the step.
