How-to guide
Import the Converter's files into Shopify
Atelier Démo is moving from WooCommerce to Shopify with 180 products in three sizes and its customer list. This guide starts from the files the Converter wrote and takes you to the products and customers to check in Shopify.

The files written for Shopify
At the Export step, the Converter writes one CSV file per conversion, on your computer: comma separator, CRLF line endings, UTF-8 with BOM by default (Encoding setting in Settings). The suggested name is your file's name followed by _shopify, for example products-atelier_shopify.csv.
- Products: the columns of Shopify's product file (
Handle,Title,Variant SKU…), one row per variant or image, under the sameHandle. These are the column names of a Shopify export; Shopify's help now lists newer names and says it stays compatible with the older ones. - Customers: the columns of Shopify's customer file (
First Name,Email…).Accepts Email MarketingandAccepts SMS Marketingarenofor every customer: no consent is carried over. - Orders: the columns of Shopify's order export (
Email,Lineitem name…), with theNamecolumn empty. Shopify does not import them by CSV: see below.
According to its help, Shopify refuses a product or customer file larger than 15 MB. For a large catalogue, tick the split into files of at most 500 rows at the Export step: each file repeats the header row, and the rows of one Handle stay together. The split counts rows, not size: check the size of the _01.csv, _02.csv… files.
Import the products
- In the Shopify admin, open Products, then click Import.
- Click Add file and choose the file the Converter wrote (one split file at a time).
- For a first import, leave Overwrite products with matching handles unticked.
- Click Upload and continue, review the summary, then click Import products.
According to Shopify's help, an import cannot be cancelled once started, and a confirmation email is sent to you. Images are downloaded from their addresses during the import: keep the old store online until it ends (Images and image addresses).
Import the customers
- In the Shopify admin, open Customers, then click Import.
- Click Add file and choose the customer file.
- Tick Overwrite existing customers that have the same email or phone number only to update customers already in the store.
- Click Import customers.
According to Shopify's help, when several rows share an email address or a phone number, only the last one is imported; the Converter flags duplicate emails at the Review step. Passwords do not migrate to Shopify. Shopify asks you to invite your customers to create new ones.
Orders
The Converter writes an order file for Shopify, but Shopify's official help says that orders can't be imported to Shopify by using a CSV file, and points to a third-party migration app. If you choose one, first check that it reads this file. Each order's original number is in the Note Attributes column.
Shopify error messages
Shopify message
Network error: Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0
- What it means
- The column titles don't exactly match those of Shopify's template, including upper and lower case.
- What to do
- Keep the column titles the Converter wrote. If you renamed one with Edit the output (Mapping step) or in a spreadsheet, undo that change and export again.

Shopify message
Line is invalid (No details)
- What it means
- The import moves an option value from one position to another (size moving from option 1 to option 2, for example) on a product already in the store.
- What to do
- This happens when overwriting existing products. For a first import, leave overwriting unticked; otherwise, follow the temporary option name method in Shopify's help.

Shopify message
Illegal quoting error
- What it means
- The file contains commas or quotation marks that are not UTF-8 encoded.
- What to do
- The Converter writes the file in UTF-8. Import the file as it was written, or export again, rather than a copy saved by a spreadsheet.

Check the result
- In Products, compare the number of products with your original store, then open a few products: price, weight, stock, variants, images.
- A product imported as hidden is only published once you make it available on your sales channels.
- In Customers, check a few addresses and the marketing subscription,
nofor everyone. - The What will not transfer (Shopify limits) section of the Review step lists what the file does not contain.
If Shopify refuses a row
- Note the message and the line number: it is the line in the imported file, not in your original file. Find the product by its
Handle. - In History, click Start again, then Continue, and drop your original file again.
- At the Review step, correct the value with Fix if the Converter flags this product; otherwise, correct it in your original file.
- Export, then import the new file without ticking overwrite: according to Shopify's help, products whose handle already exists are then skipped.
If the Converter itself blocks the export, see Error blocking the export.
