How-to guide

Import the Converter's files into Wix

Atelier Démo is opening its store on Wix with 25 products from BigCommerce, their photos and a colour option. This guide shows what the Converter writes for Wix, how to import it according to Wix's help, and how to read its errors.

What the Converter writes for Wix

At the Export step, the Converter writes a CSV file on your computer: comma separator, CRLF line endings, UTF-8 with BOM by default (Encoding setting in Settings). The suggested name is your file's name followed by _wix, for example catalogue-atelier_wix.csv.

For Wix, the Converter writes products only. The file follows the import template of Wix's new product catalog (handle, fieldType, name, price…): each product takes a PRODUCT row, then one VARIANT row per variant and one MEDIA row per image, all under the same handle.

Check your catalog version

According to Wix's help, if the first field on your product creation page is Images and videos, your store uses the previous version of the catalog, whose import follows another template. The Converter's file follows the new catalog's template.

  • Weight and dimensions: weight in kilograms; package dimensions in centimetres, with packageUnit set to cm. According to Wix's help, this unit must match the store's measurement unit setting, or the row is in error.
  • Categories: only the last level (“Men > Shoes” becomes shoes). Wix can create categories on import, but not their hierarchy, which you rebuild in the dashboard.
  • Stock: the quantity from the original file, or IN_STOCK when it is not known.
  • Price: the number is carried as is. According to Wix's help, it is shown in your store's currency, with the same amount: €50 becomes $50 in a store set to dollars.

The Converter writes no customer or order file for Wix. Today, a customer file dropped with Wix as the target causes a technical error at the File step, and an order file is only refused when you click Export. Choose Wix as the target for a product file only. Wix has its own CSV import for contacts: the Converter does not prepare that file.

According to Wix's help, a file can hold 15 MB of data and 10,000 rows; beyond that, only the first 10,000 rows are imported. For a larger catalogue, tick the split into files of at most 500 rows at the Export step: the rows of one handle stay in the same file.

Import the products

  1. In your site's dashboard, go to Store Products.
  2. Click More Actions, then Import, then Continue.
  3. Click Upload File and choose the file the Converter wrote.
  4. Click Import.

Wix then shows a summary, with errors by row. According to its help, images can take up to an hour to upload for a large catalogue.

Read Wix's errors

Wix's help does not list its error messages one by one: they are in the error file Wix produces after the import.

  1. In the summary, click Generate Error CSV and open the file.
  2. For each error, find the product. According to Wix's help, the error is shown on the PRODUCT row, even when it comes from one of its VARIANT or MEDIA rows.
  3. Fix the cause, then click Import Another File to import the corrected file, as Wix's help says.

Check the result

  • In Store Products, compare the number of products with your original store.
  • Open a product with options: each colour must have its price, stock and SKU. Also check the images and the category.
  • Rebuild the category hierarchy in the dashboard, if your catalogue had one.
  • The What will not transfer (Wix limits) section of the Review step lists what the file does not contain.

If Wix refuses a product

  1. Note the PRODUCT row in the error file: it refers to the imported file, not to your original file. Find the product by its handle or name.
  2. In History, click Start again, then Continue, and drop your original file again.
  3. At the Review step, correct the value with Fix if the Converter flags this product; otherwise, correct it in your original file.
  4. Export, then import the new file with Import Another File.

If the Converter itself blocks the export, see Error blocking the export.
