Convert your Shopify orders into a WooCommerce file

Atelier Démo wants to keep its order history while moving from Shopify to WooCommerce. You convert two orders and see how items, written on several rows in Shopify, fit on a single row.

About the screenshots

The screenshots on this page come from another sample file: their names and numbers are not those of the text. The screens, the buttons and their position are the same.

Where you start

Atelier Démo’s Shopify order export has 3 rows, because Shopify writes one row per item:

  • order #1001 from Camille, in Lyon: a linen shirt and a belt, on 2 rows, paid and fulfilled, with the note “Livrer avant vendredi”;
  • order #1002 from John, in Austin (Texas): a candle, payment pending, no street in the address.

What you will be able to do

  • convert an order export without setting anything at the Mapping step;
  • read an order with several items in the WooCommerce file;
  • know which values to check before the import.

Before you start

  • Eloshon Converter installed on your computer: see the Download page.
  • The orders export of your Shopify store, as a CSV file: Export from Shopify.
  • You do not need an Internet connection: the file is read and converted on your computer.

Step 1: Platforms

  1. Open Eloshon Converter. On the home screen, click the New conversion button below the title.
  2. Under Source platform, click Shopify.
  3. Under Target platform, click WooCommerce.
  4. Click Continue.

Step 2: File

  1. Drag your CSV file onto the Drop a CSV, JSON or .eloshon file, or click to browse area, or click the area to choose it.
  2. Read the card: File recognized · Shopify · orders, with 3 rows: these are the file’s rows, not the orders.
  3. Click Continue.

Step 3: Mapping

No row needs handling. In the table, Subtotal is not carried by WooCommerce; the order total goes to order_total.

  1. Click Continue to review.

Step 4: Review

The counters show 2 orders and 2 rows: one row per order. The problem list is empty.

  1. Read the What will not transfer (WooCommerce limits) card: Watch for double-refund risk.
  2. Read the next line: 2 order(s): WooCommerce assigns its own IDs on import (ORDERID left empty). The source number (#1001 → #1002) is kept as order meta (meta:_source_order_number).
  3. Click Continue.

Step 5: Export

  1. Under Destination folder, keep the suggested folder (Documents, unless you changed it in Settings) or click Browse….
  2. Under File name, keep the suggested name: your file’s name followed by _woocommerce.
  3. Click Export.

An earlier export can be replaced

A file with the same name in that folder is replaced without asking. Accented letters in the name become _: “café” and “cafè” give the same file. Choose a name without accents, different for each export.

The result

The Conversion complete screen lists the files written and their folder; Open folder opens that folder. The CSV file has 2 rows after the header, one per order:

  • #1001: order_status = wc-completed, item_name = “Chemise en lin,Ceinture cuir”, item_qty = “1,1”, item_line_total = “89,45”: items are separated by commas, in the same order from one column to the next;
  • #1001: the note in customer_note, the same address for billing and shipping;
  • #1002: order_status = wc-pending, city, state (TX) and country, no street;
  • ORDERID empty, and the Shopify number in meta:_source_order_number.

Two values to check before the import

Item SKUs (Lineitem sku) are not written: the file the Converter writes for WooCommerce has no column for them, and item_product_id stays empty. item_line_total receives the Shopify line price (Lineitem price) as it is: the Converter does not multiply it by the quantity. For an item ordered more than once, item_line_total therefore covers only one item. To check it, find the orders whose item_qty holds a number above 1: for two candles at 24.00, item_line_total is 24 instead of 48. Multiply that amount by the quantity before the import.

Messages you may see

  • This file does not match the chosen source platform. The button next to the message picks the right source.
  • An order with no items is not written, and the Review screen does not name it. Compare the orders counter with the valid rows counter: if they differ, an order is missing from the file.
  • If the file cannot be written to the chosen folder, the The conversion stopped window shows Unrecognized format., even though your file is recognized: choose another folder or another name.

Importing the file into WooCommerce

The Converter stops at the file: it does not connect to your store. The steps to import it into WooCommerce, based on WooCommerce’s official help, are in Import into WooCommerce. Eloshon has not tried this import in a real store: after the import, compare a few records with your old store.

Other ways to do it

  • Your customers are moving to WooCommerce too: Customers: Shopify to WooCommerce.
  • Your file is long: at step 5, tick the option that splits it into files of at most 500 rows. Each file repeats the header.
  • You often convert files of the same shape: at step 3, Save as template keeps your choices, and Apply a template applies them next time. See Mapping templates.
