How-to guide
Import the Converter's files into WooCommerce
Atelier Démo is leaving Shopify for WooCommerce with 1,200 products in several colours. For a catalogue this size, WooCommerce's documentation advises importing in batches: this guide splits the file, imports it and says what to check.

The files written for WooCommerce
At the Export step, the Converter writes one CSV file per conversion, on your computer: comma separator, CRLF line endings, UTF-8 with BOM by default (Encoding setting in Settings). The suggested name is your file's name followed by _woocommerce.
- Products: the columns of WooCommerce's import tool (
Type,SKU,Name,Regular price,Images,Parent…). A product with variants takes avariablerow, then onevariationrow per variant, attached through the parent's SKU inParent. A product's image addresses are in a single cell. There is noIDcolumn: WooCommerce assigns its own IDs. - Customers: one row per customer, with the fields of a WordPress user (
user_login,user_email,roles…) and thebilling_…andshipping_…addresses. The login is the email address. - Orders: one row per order; the items are listed in
item_name,item_qtyanditem_line_total, separated by commas.ORDERIDis empty; the original number is inmeta:_source_order_number.
For a large catalogue, tick the split into files of at most 500 rows at the Export step: you get products-atelier_woocommerce_01.csv, _02.csv… Each file repeats the header row, and a product stays whole, its variable row before its variations. According to WooCommerce's documentation, the maximum upload size depends on your hosting.
Import the products
- In the WordPress admin, open Products > All Products, then click Import.
- Click Choose File, choose
products-atelier_woocommerce_01.csv, then click Continue. - On the Column mapping screen, check the proposed mapping: an unrecognised column is not imported.
- Click Run the importer and stay on the page until it ends.
- Repeat with
_02.csv, then with the next files.
Without Update existing products, a row whose SKU already exists in the store is skipped. Tick it to update products already created.
Customers and orders
According to WooCommerce's documentation, customers and orders are imported with an extension: free extensions from the WordPress directory, or a paid WooCommerce extension. Each extension expects its own columns: compare those of the file written with its sample file, and use its column mapping screen if it has one. Import products and customers before orders.
Passwords never migrate. According to WooCommerce's documentation, your customers will need to reset their passwords.
WooCommerce error messages
WooCommerce message
Sorry, this file type is not permitted for security reasons.
- What it means
- WordPress does not recognise the file as a CSV. This happens on some servers when the CSV contains HTML, such as product descriptions.
- What to do
- Check that the file ends in
.csv. If not enough, upload it to the server (SFTP or your host's file manager) and enter its path under Show advanced options; as a last resort, ask your host to allow this file type.

Duplicate SKU
- What it means
- This SKU already exists in the store.
- What to do
- The Converter blocks the export when two products in the file share a SKU (Review step). For a SKU already in the store, tick Update existing products, or change the SKU in your original file.

Invalid image URL
- What it means
- An image address cannot be reached.
- What to do
- Open the address in a browser: it must show the image without logging in. Otherwise, upload the image to the WordPress media library. See Images and image addresses.

WooCommerce message
Duplicate email address
- What it means
- A customer with this email address already exists.
- What to do
- The Converter flags duplicate emails in the file at the Review step. For a customer already in the store, use the extension's update mode, or remove the customer from your original file.

Product not found
- What it means
- An order refers to a product that is not in the store.
- What to do
- Import products before orders. The Converter's file names each item (
item_name), without a SKU or product ID: check that the extension you chose can find a product by its name.

Check the result
- Read the report at the end of the import: it lists skipped or failed rows, with their reason.
- In Products, check the number of products, then open a product with variants: the Variations tab must list each colour.
- Compare prices, SKUs, stock, categories and images with the original store.
- The What will not transfer (WooCommerce limits) section of the Review step lists what the file does not contain.
If WooCommerce refuses a row
- Note the row and reason given by the import report: the number is the line in the imported file, not in your original file. Find the product by its SKU.
- In History, click Start again, then Continue, and drop your original file again.
- At the Review step, correct the value with Fix if the Converter flags this product; otherwise, correct it in your original file.
- Export, then import the file concerned again: rows whose SKU already exists are skipped, unless you tick Update existing products.
If the Converter itself blocks the export, see Error blocking the export.
