Convert your Shopify customers into a BigCommerce file
Atelier Démo is taking its customers from Shopify to BigCommerce. You convert an export where customers have tags, a company or no address, and see what BigCommerce receives.

About the screenshots
The screenshots on this page come from another sample file: their names and numbers are not those of the text. The screens, the buttons and their position are the same.
Where you start
Atelier Démo’s Shopify customer export has 3 customers:
- Emma, a florist in Antwerp: a company, the tags “pro, fleuriste”, tax exempt, subscribed to e-mails;
- Ryan, in New York: the state is written as a code (
NY), tag “particulier”; - Sofia: a name and an e-mail, no address.
What you will be able to do
- know which Shopify tag becomes the BigCommerce customer group;
- spot what BigCommerce does not receive: tax exemption, password, subscription;
- read the written file, customer by customer.
Before you start
- Eloshon Converter installed on your computer: see the Download page.
- The customers export of your Shopify store, as a CSV file: Export from Shopify.
- You do not need an Internet connection: the file is read and converted on your computer.
Step 1: Platforms
- Open Eloshon Converter. On the home screen, click the New conversion button below the title.
- Under Source platform, click Shopify.
- Under Target platform, click BigCommerce.
- Click Continue.
Step 2: File
- Drag your CSV file onto the Drop a CSV, JSON or .eloshon file, or click to browse area, or click the area to choose it.
- Read the card: File recognized · Shopify · customers, with 3 rows.
- Click Continue.
Step 3: Mapping
No row needs handling: the table opens on All. Three rows are worth a look.
- Find
Tags: it goes toCustomer Group, marked Safe. - Find
Tax Exempt: it is not carried by BigCommerce. - Find
Accepts Email Marketing: it goes toReceive Marketing Emails. - Click Continue to review.
Step 4: Review
The counters show 3 customers and 3 rows, and the problem list is empty.
- Read the What will not transfer (BigCommerce limits) card: Customer passwords never migrate.
- Read the next line: 3 customer(s) imported NOT subscribed (Receive Marketing Emails = N). 1 had an explicit consent at the source (0 timestamped, 1 pending). Collect your own confirmation (double opt-in) on BigCommerce before sending anything.
- Click Continue.
The explicit consent is Emma’s: subscribed in Shopify, she arrives unsubscribed in the BigCommerce file, like the others.
Step 5: Export
- Under Destination folder, keep the suggested folder (Documents, unless you changed it in Settings) or click Browse….
- Under File name, keep the suggested name: your file’s name followed by
_bigcommerce. - Click Export.
An earlier export can be replaced
A file with the same name in that folder is replaced without asking. Accented letters in the name become _: “café” and “cafè” give the same file. Choose a name without accents, different for each export.
The result
The Conversion complete screen lists the files written and their folder; Open folder opens that folder. The CSV file has one row per customer, 3 here:
- Emma:
CompanyandAddress Company= Fleurs Janssens,Customer Group=pro; - Ryan:
State/Province=New York, spelled out from the codeNY; - Sofia: her e-mail, first name and last name, with no address;
- for everyone:
Receive Marketing Emails=N.
Customer Group only receives the customer’s first tag: “fleuriste” is not written, and step 4 does not say so. For a customer with several tags, check Customer Group in the file before the import.
Messages you may see
- This file does not match the chosen source platform. The button next to the message picks the right source.
- Customer has no e-mail: it cannot be created. This is a blocking error: click Fix and type the customer’s e-mail.
- Duplicate e-mail “emma.janssens@example.com”: only the last one is imported. This is a warning: two rows share this e-mail.
- If the file cannot be written to the chosen folder, the The conversion stopped window shows Unrecognized format., even though your file is recognized: choose another folder or another name.
Importing the file into BigCommerce
The Converter stops at the file: it does not connect to your store. The steps to import it into BigCommerce, based on BigCommerce’s official help, are in Import into BigCommerce. Eloshon has not tried this import in a real store: after the import, compare a few records with your old store.
Other ways to do it
- Your products are moving to BigCommerce too: Products: Shopify to BigCommerce. Orders, however, do not go to BigCommerce this way.
- You often convert files of the same shape: at step 3, Save as template keeps your choices, and Apply a template applies them next time. See Mapping templates.
- Your file is long: at step 5, tick the option that splits it into files of at most 500 rows. Each file repeats the header.
