Convert your WooCommerce customers into a Shopify file
Atelier Démo is taking its customers from WooCommerce to Shopify. You convert the export of WordPress accounts into a CSV file in Shopify’s customer import format.

About the screenshots
The screenshots on this page come from another sample file: their names and numbers are not those of the text. The screens, the buttons and their position are the same.
Where you start
The customer export of Atelier Démo’s WooCommerce store has 3 accounts:
- Marie, in Brussels, with the same billing and shipping address, and a phone number;
- Dave, billed in Sacramento, California, but shipped to Reno;
- the store’s administrator account, which is not a customer.
What you will be able to do
- convert a WooCommerce account export without setting anything at the Mapping step;
- understand why an account is missing from the file;
- know what does not follow to Shopify: shipping address, passwords, subscriptions.
Before you start
- Eloshon Converter installed on your computer: see the Download page.
- The customers export of your WooCommerce store, as a CSV file: Export from WooCommerce.
- You do not need an Internet connection: the file is read and converted on your computer.
Step 1: Platforms
- Open Eloshon Converter. On the home screen, click the New conversion button below the title.
- Under Source platform, click WooCommerce.
- Under Target platform, click Shopify.
- Click Continue.
Step 2: File
- Drag your CSV file onto the Drop a CSV, JSON or .eloshon file, or click to browse area, or click the area to choose it.
- Read the card: File recognized · WooCommerce · customers, with 3 rows. The Converter recognizes on its own that these are customers: nothing more to choose.
- Click Continue.
Step 3: Mapping
No row needs handling: the table opens on the All filter.
- Look through the table: the billing address columns (
billing_address_1,billing_city…) go to Shopify’s default address, marked Safe. - Find the
shipping_…columns: they are not carried by Shopify. - Find
user_login: Not identified. The login name has no place in the Shopify file. - Click Continue to review.
Step 4: Review
The counters show 2 customers and 2 rows, and the problem list is empty.
- Read the Good to know about this conversion card: 1 non-customer user(s) skipped. This is the administrator account: only accounts with the “customer” role, or no role, are kept.
- Read the What will not transfer (Shopify limits) card: Passwords do not migrate to Shopify. The second (shipping) address is not carried by Shopify. It also reminds you that purchase history does not follow and that customers arrive unsubscribed from marketing.
- Click Continue.
Step 5: Export
- Under Destination folder, keep the suggested folder (Documents, unless you changed it in Settings) or click Browse….
- Under File name, keep the suggested name: your file’s name followed by
_shopify. - Click Export.
An earlier export can be replaced
A file with the same name in that folder is replaced without asking. Accented letters in the name become _: “café” and “cafè” give the same file. Choose a name without accents, different for each export.
The result
The Conversion complete screen lists the files written and their folder; Open folder opens that folder. The CSV file has one row per customer, 2 here:
- first name, last name and e-mail in
First Name,Last NameandEmail; - the billing address in the
Default Address …columns: street, city, postcode, country (BE,US); - for Dave,
Default Address Province Code=CA: WooCommerce wrote “California”; - Marie’s phone number in
PhoneandDefault Address Phone; Accepts Email Marketing=nofor everyone: it is up to you to ask for their consent again.
Dave’s shipping address in Reno is not in the file: write it down before you close the old store.
Messages you may see
- This file does not match the chosen source platform. The button next to the message picks the right source.
- Customer has no e-mail: it cannot be created. This is a blocking error: click Fix and type the customer’s e-mail.
- Duplicate e-mail “marie@example.com”: only the last one is imported. This is a warning: two accounts share this e-mail.
- If the file cannot be written to the chosen folder, the The conversion stopped window shows Unrecognized format., even though your file is recognized: choose another folder or another name.
Importing the file into Shopify
The Converter stops at the file: it does not connect to your store. The steps to import it into Shopify, based on Shopify’s official help, are in Import into Shopify. Eloshon has not tried this import in a real store: after the import, compare a few records with your old store.
Other ways to do it
- Your WooCommerce orders are moving to Shopify too: follow Orders: WooCommerce to Shopify.
- Your products too: Products: WooCommerce to Shopify.
- You often convert files of the same shape: at step 3, Save as template keeps your choices, and Apply a template applies them next time. See Mapping templates.
- Your file is long: at step 5, tick the option that splits it into files of at most 500 rows. Each file repeats the header.
